What is Head and Neck Cancer?
Head and neck cancer is a broad term for many cancers affecting the mouth, throat, thyroid and sinuses, nasal cavity, skin and salivary glands. The most common types of head and neck cancer are thyroid cancer, mouth (oral) cancer, throat cancer and voice box (larynx) cancer.
In some cases, head and neck cancer may affect your sinuses, salivary glands and parathyroid glands. These cancers can cause throat pain, neck pain and can affect your speech and ability to swallow. Treatment options for head and neck cancer will depend on the type of cancer you have, if it has spread to other areas of your body and your overall health.

How Head and Neck Cancer is Diagnosed
At RUSH MD Anderson, specialists use advanced tools, including imaging, biopsies and endoscopies to diagnose head and neck cancer.
In most cases, your provider will begin by examining your head and neck. They will check your mouth, nasal cavities, throat and neck for any lumps. They may use a mirror to look inside your mouth for any sores or lumps.
After a physical exam, you may have imaging or tests to diagnose your condition:
- Imaging tests: You may have an ultrasound, MRI, CT scan or PET scan to identify any tumors in your head and neck, and to see if the cancer has spread.
- Endoscopy: If your provider suspects you have cancer in your throat, they may use an endoscopy to diagnose tumors. This imaging procedure places a small camera through your mouth and down your throat. During an endoscopy, your provider may perform a biopsy, taking a small piece of tissue from your throat to test for cancerous cells.
- Fine needle biopsy: In some cases, your provider may insert a needle into your neck to take a small sample of tissue. This sample will be tested for cancerous cells.
