When Angelica Hernandez Nunez wanted to improve her quality of life, she found Waterford Place Cancer Resource Center. The 64-year-old was seeking alternative therapies to ease the symptoms of treatment for breast cancer.
At the center, she found a sense of community that makes her feel protected and safe. Open to anyone affected by cancer, Waterford Place offers various programs and services to participants at no cost.
The community
Angelica knows that the moment she walks into Waterford Place, she and all other participants will be greeted with a smile.
鈥淲aterford has been a blessing,鈥 Angelica says.
She has attended various classes there, including nutrition courses and counseling. Her favorites are Reiki and music therapy sessions and the movement classes.
Through these classes, Angelica found a support system. Listening to other participants helps her understand what they鈥檙e going through, helping her as well.
Even though everyone is dealing with a different diagnosis, they鈥檙e not afraid to share their struggles, because they know there will be no judgment.
鈥淲e all speak the same language, despite having various experiences,鈥 says Angelica.
This support system has helped Angelica feel confident and develop compassion and empathy toward her community.
Developing hobbies at Waterford Place
One of Angelica鈥檚 lifelong hobbies has been reading and learning. Since her cancer diagnosis, she has shifted her reading to learn about what she is going through.
鈥淏ooks about cancer can help to heal everyone,鈥 Angelica believes.
Waterford Place has a library where participants can both check out books and bring their own to share with others. This allows them to enrich one another and share their perspectives.
鈥淭he library has been good for building friendships and sharing what we learn,鈥 Angelica says.
Best advice
When asked what advice she would give someone else with cancer, Angelica says, 鈥淓ven when the day looks dark and you cannot see light, hold your hands to the things that you believe in and keep going.鈥
Angelica believes sharing her experience with cancer and learning about others鈥 helps build trust in one another.
鈥淚t helps us find a lot of support,鈥 Angelica says, 鈥渁nd we know that we are not alone.鈥
